This anime drawing by zephyronx shows a good technique of adding colour and then returning to add the highlight and shading at the end. Adding all the light and dark areas at the same time should help you to get the shading right by keeping in mind what angle your light source is coming from.

This vector anime character was created in Photoshop by salemsail. It uses layers that are later hidden to create the correct shapes for the face and eyes and eyebrows. The advantage of using vector drawings is that they can be scaled upwards in size without loss of image quality unlike a pixel based raster image.
