Fantastic photoshop drawing of Kurt Cobain (and music) by Williams Shamir. As in many of the speed painting videos, you will see the technique of building up colour is used. To create this effect use a brush size appropriate for you drawing, reduce the hardness but also reduce the transparency of the brush (this can be found in the panel running along the top of the photoshop interface when you have the brush selected). To make it easy to edit and delete areas of colour use the layers pallette to seperate layers of different colours or areas within your drawing.
This video shows how to create hair in Photoshop from scratch with the paintbrush and smudge tools only. To recreate this technique, I have found it best to use brushes in various sizes with a soft edge and the opacity at 100% but with the flow taken down to about 70%. After creating the initial lines use the smudge tool, and use a dry brush with many points at around an 80% strength. This will mix the colours together in the main section of hair and create the look of seperate strands on the end of the hair. Repeat this over to build up the effect.
Using the small paintbrush on quite a hard setting, with sharp, quick strokes gives the impression that the drawing has been made with felt tip pens. To get the effect of movement, use long strokes in the direction of where the figure has moved from and use the colour of the item that has moved.
To access different brush menus as shown in the video; right click the image with the paintbrush selected and then click the play button on the top right hand corner. Different brush menus will be shown at the bottom of the list. If you still can’t find the sort of brush you’re looking for, you can search free brushes by category and what version of Photoshop you are using at Brusheezy.
This tutorial shows one of the many uses of the Healing Brush in Photoshop. Not only can it be used for the example above; removing dark circles under the eyes and other things such as blemishes or fine lines. It can also be used for a wide range of photo editing when trying to fix image imperfections such as scratches or dust on a lens.
I was hoping to see more! The second instalment of creating an anime drawing in photoshop - shading the skin. You can see part 1- shading the eyes here.
